Anna is the Executive Director of Urban Roots London, a community organizer, academic, and activist whose work spans multiple fields and disciplines. Catherine is a life-long United Church member and a Foundation Board Director. She believes in the role the church can play in partnering with others to create systems of change.
In this webinar, Anna and Catherine detail the history of the partnership between Siloam United Church (Catherine’s home congregation) and Urban Roots. They discuss the impact their project has on community food security, and the importance of community partnerships through land-based initiatives.
“Like many churches across the country, Siloam had some vacant land,” Catherine says. “And we knew this land could be used to grow nutritious food. In 2021, our community of faith identified the goal of expanding our outreach. We planted a large garden and donated all of the produce to people who needed it. We also identified the importance of working with like-minded agencies to advance the impact of the outreach. At the same time, Urban Roots London was profiled in an article indicating they were looking for partners in urban agriculture and food insecurity reduction. Discussions about a partnership began and became, to coin a phrase, ‘foodful‘!”
