Seeds of Hope in Bloom: Elements of Creation: A 3-Day Workshop for Connection and Community Building

In October of 2023, Denman Island United Church (Denman Island, BC) hosted a workshop with support from a Seeds of Hope grant from the Foundation.

The transformative 3-day workshop, Elements of Creation, focused on connecting with the sacred Elements of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit. Spirit, as the Quintessence of these elements, represented the very essence that binds all the components of Planet Earth together. This workshop offered a unique opportunity to build a deeper relationship with these Sacred Elements, fostering awareness of Spirit in all of Creation and uniting individuals from various spiritual paths. There were 24 participants, including the two teachers. The high turnout underscored the strong interest in the Denman Island community for what the Reclaiming Tradition has to offer.

Community and Connection

A key highlight of the workshop was the overwhelming sense of community. The event brought together people who shared a desire for connection, based on shared spiritual experiences. The workshop was highly participatory, encouraging attendees to engage with the Sacred Elements in a meaningful way. By recognizing, honoring, and experiencing these elements, participants were able to tap into a common spiritual ground that fostered a sense of unity. This experience opened the doors to the Sacred DIUC (Denman Island United Church) space for many individuals who might not have otherwise ventured into such a setting.

The shared meals during the workshop provided a beautiful opportunity for attendees to connect, allowing them to reflect on their experiences, share their insights, and ask questions that arose from each session.

Among the attendees, 15 identified as spiritual but not religious, with many no longer identifying as Christians, even though some had attended church during their childhood. One of the core objectives of the workshop was to include people from diverse spiritual backgrounds and offer a healing space for those with negative experiences from church. We saw this goal materialize, as participants found common ground through their shared experiences with the Sacred Elements.

The workshop also created the foundation for lasting community bonds, as attendees began building connections that extended beyond the event. This sense of community was seen to grow, and we anticipate that more community groups will begin utilizing the Sacred Space in the future, identifying it as a place for fostering community resilience.

Addressing the Climate Crisis

In the face of the ongoing climate crisis, the connection with the Elements of Creation offered participants a grounding experience. This connection not only strengthens our bond with the planet but also shifts our behaviors and outlooks. Two members of the Denman Island Climate Action Network (DICAN) attended the workshop, and the grounding experience of connecting with the Sacred Elements is sure to enhance their work and energy within the group.

A particularly meaningful moment in the workshop was the ritual for the Element of Water. Attendees were invited to make a personal pledge of protection to a body of water that holds significance in their lives. This pledge was symbolized by each participant pouring a cup of water onto the center of our Labyrinth, marking their commitment. We hope that the living out of these pledges will have a lasting, positive environmental impact.

Plus, the workshop also facilitated new relationships between United Church clergy and the teachers and attendees from the Reclaiming Tradition. Feedback from United Church attendees contributed to a deeper sense of reciprocity and understanding. This marks the beginning of a collaborative relationship, which we hope to build upon in the future. The Elements of Creation workshop was a deeply enriching experience for all who attended, nurturing connection, community, and a renewed commitment to the Earth and all of Creation.
