Guest Blog: The Bridge – Breaking Cycles of Harm

The Bridge is a ministry in Hamilton, ON offering various supports to ex-offenders adjusting to reintegration into the community. The Bridge and its programs grew out of a church community’s desire to provide greater follow-up after incarceration and help break the cycles of harm. In Fall 2023, they received a Seeds of Hope grant from the Foundation’s General Fund to support their Addiction and Criminal Relapse Prevention project. We invited Sarah Warry from the Bridge to share what this program means to the community they serve.

Breaking Cycles of Harm: Supporting Male Offenders on the Path to Success

Working with male offenders isn’t a glamorous cause. It doesn’t evoke the same emotional response as helping sick children or rescuing abandoned puppies. But the reality is that individuals need support and guidance to break free from cycles of harm.

In psychology, we understand that “hurt people, hurt people.” The harsh truth is that many male offenders have experienced trauma, abuse, and neglect, leading them down a path of destructive behaviour. Research shows that the rate of mental health issues, addiction, and trauma in the male prison population is alarmingly high. We often see male offenders released from jail or prison being told “Don’t do this again”. However, often no one assists them in learning how to not repeat the behaviours that get them into trouble.

Getting to the Root

At The Bridge, we’re committed to helping individuals understand the root causes of their behaviour and develop new ways to manage their thoughts, emotions, and actions. Our Addiction and Criminal Relapse Prevention program provides a safe space for men to confront their shame and guilt, and be vulnerable, often for the first time in their lives.

Unfortunately, our society often prioritizes reactive care over preventative healthcare, particularly when it comes to mental health. Many men struggle to seek help, and often those who have offended are denied the support they need to succeed or don’t ask due to persistent stigma.

Bridging the Gap

With open arms, we welcome male offenders, recognizing that people want to change but may not know where to start or who to turn to. We understand that individuals may make choices based on survival or trauma responses, and we’re committed to helping them heal.

Our program focuses on communication skills, anger management, trauma recovery, substance abuse support, healthy relationships, and more. By providing the tools to shape a new future, they have hope that a better tomorrow exists. They reclaim their power to share their experiences and connect with others who understand their struggles. Peer support and guidance from our staff help our clients discover a new sense of purpose and potential.

Ultimately, the generous Seeds of Hope grant has brought hope to the men we serve. This support reminds them that life has meaning and they can achieve success. Together, we can break cycles of harm and create a brighter future for our clients, their families, and our community. By the Grace of God, we work together as good neighbours to help those who are struggling. Together we help them reach new goals and make healthier life choices. We are grateful for the financial assistance and the message it sends that everyone deserves help in their time of need.
