Webinars are back! Join us for our first webinar of the season, Works in Action style, as our past grant recipients share about their initiatives, learnings, and experience working with the Foundation. This one-hour webinar will showcase how United Church summer camps provide a sacred space to build community, deepen connections with one other, Creation, and God. Additionally, learn how various camps use support from the Foundation to modernize and upgrade their facilities, develop engaging new programming, and welcome individuals who may not otherwise have access to the camp experience.

About our Speakers and their Camps  

Terry Linsley, Camp Tapawingo, SK: 

Terry is the Executive Director at Camp Tapawingo in Candle Lake, SK.  

Camp Tapawingo turns 78 this summer! They have campers ranging from 6 to 16 years of age, with an average of about 300-350 campers per season.  

Terry has been involved with Tapawingo in some capacity since 1977, first as a camper and then working in just about all the roles throughout the years and now serving as the Executive Director. She is very passionate about what the experience of community at summer camp can provide for our youth, especially in this new digital era. 

Rev. Scott Parsons, Burry Heights, NL 

Scott is a member of the Board of Directors for Burry Heights Camp and Retreat Centre 

Scott is a born and bred Newfoundlander. He completed his M. Div. at Emmanuel College in Toronto, Ontario and then was ordained in 2003. He served Musgrave Harbour Pastoral Charge for four years. The rest of Scott’s ministry/work to date has been in pastoral care. He served for ten years as the United Church Chaplain for institutions (Health Sciences, Janeway Children’s Hospital and Her Majesty’s Penitentiary) in St. John’s, NL. Currently he is Regional Manager for Pastoral Care & Ethics for Acute Care with NL Health Services. 

Scott enjoys connecting with people and singing, which is a huge part of Burry Heights Camp! Scott and his spouse Miriam were camp chaplains who brought their young children to camp. Both of their children grew up attending Burry Heights summer camps and are still volunteering or working with the camping program. Scott and Miriam often go to Burry Heights weekly to have communion with the campers. They find it wonderful to sing and connect with campers and counsellors. 

Burry Heights Summer Camping Program is eight high energy camps of 80-100 campers that run weekly from late June to mid-August. There are Junior, Intermediate and Teen Camps and one All Ages Camp where they partner with Easter Seals for an inclusive camp. Finding the right words to describe what is experienced at Burry Heights Camp is almost impossible but it is summed up with the phrase, “Burry Heights Magic”! 

Ryan Anderson, Cave Springs Camp, ON 

Ryan is a former engineer and entrepreneur from the Rec + Leisure industry. He is the Executive Director at Cave Springs Camp and Retreat, which is a non-profit, year-round camping and retreat facility.  

Since 1951, Cave Springs has provided Christian Summer Camp for all kids ages 5 to 15 years old. 

The remainder of the year is spent hosting school groups for day and overnight programs, and they host weddings and private rentals. 

Cave Springs Camp is nestled in the Niagara Escarpment in Beamsville Ontario, with have 2 dining halls (each with a commercial kitchen), 6 cabins, a rec room, a craft hall, an amphitheater, 4 fire pits, 115 beds, a pool, a pond, a high and low ropes course, pavilion, and walking trails.
