Coffee With: Dan Hayward Webinar Replay
Thanks for joining us for our webinar, Coffee With: Dan Hayward- Disability, Inclusion, and a Disabled God! If you missed the conversation with Dan, here is the replay!
Rev. Dan Hayward is on the staff of the Conseil Régional Nakonha:ka Regional Council, serving as Pastoral Relations Minister. He is in ordained ministry, has been the chair of the United Church’s Theology and Inter-Church Inter-Faith Committee. Dan chaired the work that produced the Theologies of Disabilities Report, and is a member of the church’s Disability and Accessibility Network.
In this webinar, Dan discusses his own experience as a disabled person in the church, the accessibility of the church to disabled people in both physical and spiritual ways, and a new vision of disability, inclusion, and a Disabled God.
“I think in terms of barriers of architecture and of attitude,” Dan says. “We know about [barriers of architecture], or can learn. We can put in the money and effort to do something about them. And when we do this, we may conclude that we are done– fully inclusive and accessible. Yet, we need to remember that two people with disabilities, even the same disability, may have completely different accessibility needs. A one-size-fits-all approach to accessibility doesn’t work. And just as importantly are barriers of attitude. Accessibility goes beyond allowing disabled people to enter the building. Barriers of attitude can make a fully accessible church building unwelcoming to disabled people.”
