Seeds of Hope in Bloom: Circles of Connection

In May 2024, 27 retired ministers from across the Pacific Mountain Region gathered at Bethlehem Retreat Centre for Circles of Connection – a retreat designed to nurture relationships, renew purpose, and strengthen community.

This gathering was supported by a $4,500 Seeds of Hope grant from the James Robertson Memorial Fund.

When participants arrived, they stepped into a rhythm that balanced worship, conversation, creativity, and rest. They walked along the lake, shared meals, sang familiar hymns, laughed together, and made space for reflection. They spoke their honest reality that retirement from ministry can also mean a loss of connection. Many shared openly about missing collegial relationships and in some cases, struggling to find a church community where they feel at home.

Experiences could be named and held with care.

Participants reflected on questions of purpose and identity: What continues to call them forward? What brings them joy? How are their gifts still unfolding? Through small group conversations, creative expression, and shared worship, a renewed sense of connection began to take shape.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Participants described the gathering as affirming, restorative, and deeply needed. The thoughtful balance of structured time and open space allowed relationships to form naturally and meaningfully.

“The inner-child in all of us had an opportunity to blow bubbles and dance in the sun, one afternoon.”

The impact extended beyond the retreat itself. New members joined the 4th Quarter Network, which offers an opportunity for retired United Church ministers of the Pacific Mountain Region to connect for conversation and inspiration. Participants also committed to welcoming newly retired ministers, helping to ensure that this sense of connection continues to grow.

Support retreats like this.

One participant shared: “My questions, challenges, learnings are shared by others from whom I can learn and get support. Being part of a network is strong and powerful.”

When you give, you help create spaces like Circles of Connection, where people can reflect and rediscover their sense of purpose. Your support makes it possible to hold these gatherings, ensuring that retired ministers remain connected and cared for.
