Seeds of Hope in Bloom: EmpowerRoots
In Langley, BC, Signal Hill Life Education Society is helping Indigenous youth explore identity and resilience storytelling rooted in culture and community.
With the support of a $5,000 Seeds of Hope grant from the Wesley C. Smith Estate Fund in 2024, the organization developed a new educational video and curriculum resource for students from grades 9-12 as part of the EmpowerRoots: Indigenous Intrinsic Worth Educational Initiative. The resource was created alongside Indigenous educators and leaders, who guided both the storytelling and the cultural framing of the program.
“Scalable impact requires quality. Investing in high-quality production makes the resource engaging and sustainable for long-term use in classrooms.”
The video and lesson plan invite students into conversations about belonging, leadership, and self-worth. For Indigenous students, the resource offers representation and affirmation grounded in lived experience. For non-Indigenous students, it opens opportunities for deeper understanding and respect through Indigenous-led teaching.
Early feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Educators and partners have affirmed both the cultural integrity of the resource and its relevance to student well-being and leadership development. Teachers have been given access to classroom materials designed to encourage reflection and meaningful dialogue.
Authentic collaboration is essential.
Throughout the process, Signal Hill learned that authentic collaboration must remain at the centre of the work. Indigenous partners helped ensure the content was respectful, grounded, and community-informed from the beginning. The organization also saw the power of storytelling to engage students in ways that traditional teaching alone may not.
The impact of this work continues to grow. Signal Hill hopes the project will contribute to stronger inclusion of Indigenous perspectives in Canadian classrooms while helping foster resilience and belonging among Indigenous youth.
